Artist using photography and moving image.

Brighton & Hove, Sussex

I’m a documentary photographer interested in the politics of home (wheather outside or in) and how routines express who we are. I’m drawn to the small details that reveal a person’s inner world.

I’m also invested in the ethics of editing and representation. Staying true to life, especially in how skin tone is photographed and edited, matters to me. I approach colour and post-production with care, aiming for images that honour the people in them rather than idealise or neutralise them.

My background spans photography, video, and audio, shaped by an interest in how people move, gather, and inhabit their personal or community spaces.

I work mostly with natural light, and often shoot with a 50mm lens which helps represent a person to person distance.

I’m inspired by photographing children, meeting them at their level. I also work with community groups, clubs, and places of faith, documenting people as they share their lived spaces.

If you’re interested in working together to document a part of your life, or to memorialise someone young, middle-aged, or older through a documentary lens, please drop me a line.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how we can collaborate, whether through still images, sound, or moving image.

All the best,
Miriam

Commercial and personal work

A photo essay of a 92 year old living independently at home.

Over two shoot days, about two weeks apart, I spent time with my grandmother — four hours on the first day and two on the second.

The first shoot day, My aunt came over for dinner: we had a casserole made by my Grandmother, Bar, followed by stewed pears with currants and Muscovado sugar for afters.

An annual card making craft event with some wonderful pastries.

Photographing grassroots arts organisations activities, events and workshops.

Personal work

A few shots of my son as a baby. I would love to do some more newborn shoots.

In 2020, we were thinking of moving areas, so we decided to take a Saturday trip to explore the nature spots near where we hoped to live.

The most amazing afternoon unfolded.

I was given free rein to photograph leaf studies — dancing leaves as I imagined them — backlit by the winter sun, with rainbow lens glare making a surprise appearance.

When editing, I usually take a documentary photography approach, something I learned during a short course at London College of Communication (Seeing the World by Anders Birger — I’d recommend it to anyone looking to upskill in photo essays). That means minimal colour editing (though I did create a ‘mood’ for some of these images) and minimal sharpening. I’m still aiming to capture the authentic feeling that was in the air that November day.
